  1. Identify a safe direction.
  2. Point the dude in a safe direction with your finger off the trigger.
  3. Open the bolt.
  4. Look inside the chamber and check the magazine to ensure the is no ammunition in the rifle.
  5. While maintaining a safe direction, take the cleaning rod in your “non-gun” hand.
  6. With the bolt open, insert the cleaning rod in the muzzle of the firearm.
  7. You will see the cleaning rod protrude from the chamber.
  8. You can now attach a cleaning brush or flannel batch to remove any excess oil from the barrel.
