List 4 safety rules in order of importance
- Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction.
- Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
- Always treat a firearm as if it were loaded.
- Always know your target and what is beyond it.
Explain what is meant by safe direction
To ensure that in the event of accidental discharge that no person shall be injured or killed. Your safe direction should be able to stop a bullet.
When should safety precautions be carried out.
- When receiving a firearm.
- Before handing over a firearm.
- Before cleaning a firearm.
List the five steps in order to carry out safety precautions with either a semi- automatic pistol or revolver
- Identify a safe direction
- Point the firearm in a safe direction with your finger off the trigger.
- Remove the magazine, while keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
- Pull back the slide.
- Keeping the muzzle in a safe direction, with your finger off the trigger, check inside the chamber and down the magazine well to ensure there’s no ammunition.
What is magazine safety?
Magazine safety prevents the gun from being fired once the magazine has been removed.
What does it mean to be muzzle conscious?
You should at all times be aware of where the muzzle of your firearm is pointing.
List 10 general safety rules.
- Be muzzle conscious.
- Always be sure the firearm is devised in the holster.
- Never climb walls/ fences with a loaded firearm in hand.
- Always keep the firearm unloaded when in storage or out of use.
- Do not handle the firearm unnecessarily.
- Never attempt to modify your firearm in anyway, this can only be carried out by a qualified gun-smith.
- Be sure before you shoot.
- Never use a firearm whilst under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
- Always know the condition of your firearm.
- Always remember to keep your firearm locked in a safe when not in use.
List 6 Range Rules
- Do not handle your firearm whilst standing behind anybody else.
- Never load your firearm whilst standing behind anybody else.
- You may only begin to fire on the range officers command.
- If you drop something while standing on the firing line, you may not pick it up until firearm is made safe and in its holster
- Never turn around when you are on the firing line.
- When you arrive at the range your firearm must be either in a bad, box or holster.
What does “PPE” stand for and name the two types

- Ear Protection
Why should you not only use earplugs to protect your hearing while at an indoor shooting range?
They are not sufficient enough to protect the eardrums and the bone behind the ear.
Explain what is meant by carry condition 1?
The firearm has a loaded magazine, a round in the chamber, the hammer is back and the safety catch is on.
Explain what is meant by carry condition 3.
Loaded magazine, empty chamber, hammer forward and safety catch is off.
