Module 7- Gynecology, Pregnancy, Childbirth Flashcards
Aminocentesis
Puncturing the amniotic sac and withdrawing fluid
Amnion
A thin, transparent sac containing the fetus and the fluid surrounding the fetus
Amniotic fluid
The fluid inside the amnion, protects the fetus from injury and changes in temperature
Embryo
The second stage of gestation, ovum becomes a complex living organism
Endometrium
The inside lining of the uterus
Endometritis
Inflammation of the inside lining of the uterus
Fetus
The last stage of gestation, a live offspring while it’s in the mother
Gestation
Pregnancy, the period from conception to childbirth during which an ovum passes through several stages of development

Refers to a pregnant woman
Hysterorrhexis
Ruptured uterus
Labor

A tough membrane covering the viscera (organs in the belly) and lining the abdominal cavity
Perionitis
Inflammation of the periotoneum
Placenta
A structure made up of a network of blood vessels (arteries and veins). Makes an intimate bond with the endometrium and attaches to the fetus via umbilical cord. The fetus absorbs oxygen and nutrients and excretes carbon dioxide and wastes through this vascular structure
Postpartum
After labor is completed
Climacteric
A transitional period of life, perimenopause
Conception
Fertilization – Penetration of the ovum by a spermatozoon, resulting in a fertilized egg
