module 6 (textbook ch 5) Flashcards
what is ptss theory?
extends the behavioral patterns to the individual, black culture, family, community and society.
what is holism?
includes interrelationships between part and the whole, individual and community.
where do symptoms of vacant esteem (etc.) show up?
in black families through parenting.
how is multigenerational trauma passed down besides through dna/genes?
through parenting.
ex: black mothers speaking down to their kids during slavery.
what is “crabs in a barrel?”
the cultural phenomenon dr. degruy cites in her book in which one person gaining success in a community is actually pulled down by another member of that community.
why? this is because of the fear of abandonment. it is a symptom of vacant esteem and we see this dating all the way back to slavery as slaves would sometimes rat out other slaves to the slave master in hopes to appease to them.
what is another symptom of ptss that dr. degruy states is
disrespect
what are some ways we can navigate through life and heal?
- higher education
- access to a healthy nutrition
- decision making policies
- knowing ourselves
how is black culture seen?
negative and demeaning as it is often publicly displayed as verbal and physical aggression.
how do black americans often “plan to fail” and why?
because of generational trauma, black Americans have been conditioned to think less of themselves and through PTSS’ symptom, vacant esteem, black Americans often believe they can not succeed as they believe they have little to no value that they can offer to the community/society or even themselves.
what is the example of crabs in a barrel dr. degruy wrote in her book?
when the black girl she met stopped working hard at school because her friends made fun of her for being a “goody two shoes” and her own family made her feel like they were pulling her down. that is why she eventually left her town for a higher education.
what is one value adopted by the slave masters through ptss and how does it show up in black children?
the value for money/capitalism.
black children and black people in general often value expensive clothes, cars etc. and this is because society has conditioned us to believe we have no value and materialistic goods can provide with some value. furthermore, this illusion of being rich than being poor is connected to vacant esteem as black children often do not value themselves and rely on expensive clothes etc. in order to give them the facade that is being valued.
what is positive racist socialization?
when racist socialization is done correctly young people learn early on about the systemic racism that surrounds them and they are taught coping mechanisms and the skills necessary to survive.
occurs when family provides children with historical knowledge
