A

Qing limited contact with the West. Didn’t feel like they needed anything from the West. They maintained trade imbalance lots of silver coming in for tea, porcelain and silk going out.

A

The Tokugawa policy of isolationism was based on a fear of outside influence. They tightened up contacts with the outside world. Worried about the loyalty of the Japanese who had adopted Christianity, they were also nervous about European imperial designs.
