Module 5: Transition Elements Flashcards
What is a transition element?
d block elements that form atleast one ion with a partially filled d-orbital
What are the properties of transition elements?
- Have variable oxidation states
- Form coloured compounds
- The elements and their compounds can act as catalysts
Why do transition elements have variable oxidation states?
It depends on the compound that is formed
What is a complex ion?
Metal ion surrounded by coordinately bonded ligands
What is a ligand?
Molecule or ion that donates a pair of electrons to a central metal ion
How do transition elements form coloured compounds?
The colour of a solution is linked to the partially filled d-orbitals of the transition metal ion. The colour of a solution can vary with different oxidation states
What do transition elements form?
Complex ions
What is the coordinate number?
Number of coordinate bonds that are formed with the central metal ion
What is a monodentate ligand?
A ligand that is able to donate only one pair of electrons to a central metal ion
What is a bidentate ligand?
A ligand that has two active lone pairs at bonding level
What are the most common coordinate number of complex ions?
4 and 6
