Q

Why is self-appraisal important?

A
  • Improves learners’ classroom experience: By identifying your lessons’ strengths and weaknesses, you are able to use this information to create a better overall experience for your students.
  • Professional development: From workshops and seminars, to post-graduate courses and master’s degrees, the options are endless. Through self-appraisal, you can target areas that you most need to work on.
  • Improves your lesson planning: you will identify areas that are consistently causing issues in your lesson plans. There are many recurring problems that can easily be remedied.
  • Re-using lesson plans: Self-appraisal makes the process of re-using lesson plans much more reliable, as you have identified areas of weakness that can be remedied in future classes.

Q

What key information is needed on a self-appraisal form?

A

Basic information: In this section, we need to provide the basic details related to the lesson plan, such as the aim of the lesson plan and the learner profile.

Criteria: The aim is to discover if the lesson we have planned provides sufficient support for the students to meet the lesson’s aim, and if the teacher has allocated enough time, resources, and attention to each stage of the class.

Strengths: In this section, the teacher can take note of the areas of the lesson that they feels were successful, and aided in improving the students’ linguistic abilities.

Areas for improvement: consider areas that would benefit from changes in future lessons. What didn’t work well in the lesson? Was anything missing?
