Module 5 - Keywords Flashcards
Transition metal/element
A d block element that forms at least one ion with an incomplete d sub shell
Complex ion
A metal ion bonded to one or more ligands by coordinate bonds (dative covalent bonds)
Ligand
A molecule/ion that can donate a pair of electrons with the transition metal to form a coordinate bond
Stereoisomer
Species with the same structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms in space
Coordination number
The total number of coordinate bonds formed in the complex
d block element
An element with its highest energy electron in a d orbital
Bidentate ligand
An atom/group of atoms which forms 2 coordinate (dative covalent) bonds to a central metal ion or metal
Six-fold coordination
A complex which forms an octahedral shape with a coordination number of 6
Cisplatin
A square planar complex Pt(NH3)2Cl2 which a cis isomerism - used in treatment of cancers as it attaches to DNA preventing replication
Optical isomers
Isomers with the same structural formula which form non-superimposable mirror images to a chiral centre
Chiral centre
A carbon atom which has 4 different atoms or groups around it
Haemoglobin
The iron centred complex in blood which is used in the transport of oxygen
