Module 4 - Skeletal System Flashcards
5 Main Functions of Skeletal System
Support Movement Storage of minerals and fat Protection Blood cell formation
How does the skeletal system provide support?
Bones give the body framework.
Supports weight
Keeps everything in the right place
Softer tissues of the body hang on or around.
How does the skeletal system provide movement?
Structure for our muscles to attach to.
Muscles contract, pull bones for movement.
What is Hematopiesis
Blood cell formation. Made within bone marrow
Name the 2 skeleton types
Axial
Appendicular
What is the axial skeleton?
Vertical part of the body
Like the axis
Head, neck, chest, back
What is the appendicular skeleton
All bones in limbs as well as bones that attach to axial skeleton
What are the 5 classifications of bones
Long bones Short bones Flat bones Irregular bones Sesamoid bones
Characteristics of long bones
Longer than wide
Usually protruding ends
Act as levers when muscles contract
Characteristics of short bones
Cube like shape
Equal length width
provide stability while allowing motion
carpals, tarsals
