Module 3 - Integumentary System Flashcards
Epidermis
Most superficial layer of the skin
Composed of keratinized, stratified, squamous epithelium
What are the layers of the skin
Stratum Corneum Stratum Lucidum (only in thick 5 layer skin) Stratum Granulosum Stratum Spinosum Stratum Basale
Keratinocytes
The cells in all layers of the skin except the Stratum Basale
A cell that manufactures and stores the protein keratin
Keratin
An intracellular fibrous protein that gives hair, nails, skin their hardness and water resistance.
Stratum Basale
Deepest epidermal layer
Cells bond to the dermis via the basement membrane
Intertwining collagen fibers with dermis
Dermal Papilla
Found in the superficial portion of the dermis
Finger like
Increase the strength of connection between the epidermis and dermis.
Basal Cells
Primarily make up the stratum basale
Cuboidal shaped stem cell
Precursor of the keratinocytes of the epidermis
Merkel Cell
A receptor
Found in Stratum Basale
Touch nerve sensors
Abundant in hands and feet.
Melanocyte
Produce the pigment melanin
Gives hair and skin colour
Protects living cells of epidermis from UV
Stratum Spinosum
Spiny in appearance
Protruding cell processes that join cells.
Stratum Granulosum
Grainy appearance due to further changes in keratinocytes as they are pushed from spinosum
Stratum Lucidum
Layer only found in thick skin with 5 layers - hands and feet.
Smooth translucent layer
Keratinocytes are dead and flattened now
Densely packed with eleidin
Stratum Corneum
Most superficial layer
Usually 15-30 layers fo cells
Entire layer replaced in about 4 weeks.
