Module 4 -protein & amino acids Flashcards
Total protein excreted in normal urine is ?
0.1g/day
Normal urine contains a small amount of protein from which 2 sources?
Plasma and renal tubular epithelial cells
What are the 4 ways proteinuria can occur?
Glomerular, overload , tubular , post-renal proteinuria
How is glomerular proteinuria indicated ? How does this occur?
Increased amount of albumin and after strenuous exercise or postural changes
Overload proteinuria has a high concentration of? Are they filterable ? Why or why not?
High concentration of low molecular weight proteins such as hemoglobin , myoglobin, or bench john protein in the plasma. Low weight = filterable
define tubular proteinuria?
defective tubular reabsorption of protein from the filtrate
what is post renal proteinuria? what is secreted in the urine?
inflammation of the lower urinary tract. cellular protein is secreted in urine
What are the 3 degrees of proteinuria?
slight , moderate, heavy
How much g/day is found in slight proteinuria?
0.5g/day
How much g/day is found in moderate proteinuria?
0.5-4g/day
How much g/day is found in heavy proteinuria?
4g/day
what false reactions can a dipstick indicate?
Increased alkaline urine
sulfosalicyic acid may cause false positives because?
turbid urines will cause false postive
who benefits from microalbumin methods?
type 1 and type 2 diabetes benefit from close monitoring of the urinary alubumin concentration
what are bence-jones proteins? are they filterable?
immunoglobulin light chains , filterable and excreted in the urine
