Why is 5S Important
- Creates order in a disorganized area
- Creates an organized, clean and high-performance workplace
- Can be used as Quick Wins and Process Control
5S: Sort
- Keep things used frequently
- Store things used less frequently nearby
- Remove things not used at all
- Establish a Quarantine Area for items in doubt
5S: Set In Order
- Arrange items that are needed in the area
- Create order so anyone can find and return things
Examples: Shadow Boards, Labeled locations, Taped floor outlines
5S: Shine
- Remove the dirt, grime and dust from the work area
- Performed once and then done on a schedule by the employees who use the area
5S: Standardize
- Develop a consistent way of implementing the tasks (including Sort, Set In Order, and Shine!)
- Procedures are formalized and documented
5S: Sustain
- 5S Program has a discipline that ensures its continued success
- 5S Mentality is ingrained in everyday work life procedures
- Periodic audits are planned and executed
- Management/Supervisors are held responsible for correcting deficiencies and agreed upon improvements
