What are channels of communication?
Emails, face-to-face meetings, social media posts, letters, etc.
What are Carl Rogers five rules for active listening?
Listen for message content
Listen for feelings
Respond to feelings
Note all cues
Paraphrased and restate
What are some tips for active listening besides Carl Roger’s rules?
Reduce distractions like background noise or internal noise
take in the message silently
Show the speaker that you are listening both verbally and nonverbally
What are the eight characteristics of supportive communication?
Congruent: the verbal messages should match the thoughts and feelings of the person expressing them
Use descriptive language not evaluative language
Focus on the problem, not the person
Use validating statements, not invalidating statements
Be specific, not global. Avoid vague statements.
Refer to what was stated previously in order to carry the interaction forward. Conjunctive not disjunctive
Make sure you own your statements by using I statements
Show that you have listened actively while providing reflective statements

Personal beliefs shape the way individuals interpret messages and events, which then influences their behavior and communication style
Individuals communication styles are directly influenced by their belief system
What is the definition of effective communication?
The receiver interprets the message as it was intended by the sender

What’s one difference between personal and professional communication?
Professional communication has a more diverse audience and therefore requires more thought to make sure everyone understands
