what is the internet
the internet is a worldwide computer network, consisting of computers and networks that are linked using telephone lines, undersea cables, satellite or microwave for the purpose of communicating and sharing of resources
what does IP stand for

what is an ISP
company that has a permanent, fast connection to the internet which sell their internet access and services for a monthly fee

what is bandwidth or data transfer
total amount of data that can be carried from one point to another in a given period of time
how is bandwidth measured
bits per second: kilobits pers second(Kbps), megabits per second(Mbps)
what is broadband
any permanent, high speed, high bandwidth connection to the internet
what does ADSL stand for
asymmetrical digital subscriber line
what is an ADSL
permanent digital connection to the internet using telephone line, connection split into phone calls and internet
how do you get ADSL
a modem or router used connect your computer to an ADSL line that is rented from telecommunications provider
why is there more bandwidth for download than upload speed
need higher speed to download web pages, music or video files than needed to send an email (tend download more than upload)
breakdown the costs of ADSL
- monthly ISP cost
- cost rental line
*dont pay connection time to internet but pay telephone calls at normal rate
2 characteristics of ADSL
- access internet and make phone calls at same time
- check availability of service from ISP as there is not coverage in every area
what is your ‘cap’
ISPs offer different packages which offer different, limited amounts of gigabytes of data to be downloaded and uploaded in a month, the limited amount is referred to as your cap
What is the world wide web
service runs on the internet and is a vast collection of interlinked, interactive documents stored on computers all over the world, accessed via the internet
briefly describe HTML
HyperText Markup Language, supports links other documents as well as graphics, audio and video files
what is a web page
any electronic document on the web
what is a website
consists of related web pages and is maintained by organisation such as a school or a company
