AB of choice in child with pneumonia
Amoxicillin - works against strep pneumonia which is the most common bacterial pathogen of pneumonia.
Can add a macrolide at 48hrs if no improvement. A macrolide is first line in a child with a penicillin allergy.
AB of choice for child with pertussis/whooping cough
macrolide - azythromycin or clarithromycin
AB of choice for strep throat/GAS?
Amoxicillin
ABs of choice for pneumonia
Mild-moderate: amoxicillin orally or consider benzylpenicllin
Severe: ceftriaxone + flucloxicillin AND consider vancomycin is MRSA suspected
Signs and symptoms of group A strep/scarlet fever?
fever
sore throat
rash - sandpaper feel
white coating on tongue that progresses to red and bumpy
swollen glands in neck
epiglottitis signs and symptoms?
very sore throat
fever
drooling due to difficulty swollowing
dysphagia
hoarse voice
usually no barking cough due to pain
S&S of croup?
sore throat
barking cough
hoarse voice
increased WoB
fever
post strep throat complications?
Post strep glomerulonephritis
arthritis
abscess around tonsils
rheumatic fever
Perussis S&S
Persistent cough following cold like symptoms
Well between paroxysmal cough
EBV S&S?
fatigue
enlarged spleen
hepatomegaly
rash
inflamed throat
Joint complication following an URTI?
transient synovitis
