(Module 3)Organisation and the digestive system Flashcards
What is a tissue
A tissue is a group of cells with the same structure and function working together
What is an organ
An organ is a collection of tissues. All organs have several tissues working together to complete a special function
What is a whole multicellular organism
This is made up of a number of organ systems working together.
Why is a digestive system needed
Because the body cannot absorb molecules straight away. They need to be broken down into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed and used by cells.
Name the 13 parts of the digestive system
Mouth (teeth, tongue and salivary gland) Gullet Diaphragm Stomach Liver Gall bladder Duodenum Bile duct Large intestine Small intestine Appendix Rectum Anus
What do the glands do in the digestive system
The pancreas and salivary glands release enzymes to break down the food.
How does the body break down the food
Enzymes are released from the glands
Where is the food digested
The two main organs are the stomach and small intestine
How has the small intestine adapted for the digestive system
It has a long surface area to collect the molecules. It has a good blood stream and a small diffusion distance to the blood vessels.
Name the three large food molecules made up of smaller molecules joined together as part of the cell metabolism
Carbohydrates, lipids and proteins
What is a protein molecule made up of
It is a source of growth made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and presented in long chains of AMINO ACID
What are carbohydrates made up of
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What are lipids made up of
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What are the three food nutrients for
Protein- a source of growth
Carbohydrates - a source of fuel
Lipids - a source of energy
Main facts of the three food nutrients
