Module 3- Metallic Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

How does metallic bonding work??

A

The metal gives up its outer electrons to form a sea of delocalised electrons, which are attracted to the positive metal ions formed.

Q

Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat??

A

They have free delocalised electrons that can carry the heat/ charge

Q

Why do metals get more dense as you go across the periodic table??

A

AR decreases as the number of protons and neutrons increases

Q

Why has magnesium got a higher boiling point than sodium??

A

It forms 2+ ions because it has two electrons in its outer shell whilst Na forms 1+ ions. Therefore there are more delocalised electrons and more positive ions attracted to eachother in Mg than in Na
