Module 3- Group 7 Metals Flashcards
How does physical state and boiling point change down the group??
Goes from gas (fluorine) to iodine that is a solid. Boiling and melting point increase down the group due to stronger London forces ( more electrons)
How does the colour change down the group??
Colours get darker, from fluorine that is yellow, chlorine that is green, then bromine is orange and iodine is purple
How does reactivity change down the group?
Gets less reactive, outer electrons further away and more shielded means it’s harder to attract electron to fill outer shell
How will chlorine react with bromide and iodide halides
Chlorine will displace both Br and I because it’s the most reactive. The solution will go orange when bromine is released and purple when iodine is released
How will bromine react chloride and iodide halides
Won’t react with chlorine, but will displace iodine to release purple colour
How will iodine react with chloride and iodide halides??
Neither will be displaced because iodine isn’t reactive enough
Ionic equation for reaction of chlorine and bromide ions
Cl2+2Br- -> 2Cl- + Br2
