Q

What phonetic challenges do Chinese learners typically face?

A

There are 15 phonemes we have in English that are not found in Mandarin Chinese.

Cantonese and other Southern Chinese languages are syllable-timed languages (the syllables take approximately equal amounts of time to pronounce).

Syllables in Chinese generally end with a vowel sound. This means many Chinese speakers will drop the final consonant in an English word.

Long and short vowels do not exist in Chinese, so they tend to find it very hard to distinguish between short and long vowel sounds in English.
