Q
Name and explain 4 features of spoken English.
A
Word linking: Involves two separate words linking together when spoken, e.g. “break open an egg”.
Assimilation: When a sound in one word causes a change in a sound in a neighboring word, e.g. “in Boston” the /n/ becomes /m/ - “im Boston.”
Elision: When a sound is lost or omitted. It is often the last sound of a word, and most commonly the /t/ and /d/ sounds, e.g. “left back” becomes “lef back.”
Regional accents: Refer to the way people from different countries, regions or social groups speak English.
