Module 3 Flashcards
mode
the most frequently occurring score in a distribution
mean
the arithmetic average of a distribution, half the scores are above the median and half the scores below the median
range
the difference between the highest and lowest scores in a distribution
standard deviation
a computed measure of how much scores vary around the mean score
normal curve
a symmetrical bell-shaped curve that describes the distribution of many types of data; most scores fall near the mean
statistical significance
a statistical statement of how likely it is that an obtained result occurred by chance
variable
anything that can vary and is feasible and ethical to measure
variance
the measure of a spread, or dispersion of the scores within a sample or population
correlation
a measure of the extent to which two factors vary together and thus of how well either factor predicts the other
regression
the way we relate dependent variables to independent variables in a study
sample size
the number of people in a group
population
all those in a group being studied, from which random samples may be drawn
sampling bias
the collection of samples that do not accurately represent the entire group
