Introduction
This modules explains the seven environmental principles (EP’s) and shows how they can be used to protect the environment while pursuing a better quality of life for the citizens of this planet. It also covers discussion of the paradigm, concept, principles and tools of sustainable development (SD) and how these can be applied by students.

Principles of Sustainable Development (SD):
This puts man at the center of all development efforts.
Primacy of Developing Full Human Potential.

This implies the development of appropriate technology to solve development problems with due consideration to its impact on society and ecology.
Holistic Science and Appropriate Technology.
Principles of Sustainable Development (SD):
This considers the inherent strengths of local and indigenous knowledge, practices, and beliefs while respecting cultural diversity, moral standards and the spiritual nature of the Filipino society.
Cultural, Moral, and Spiritual Sensitivity.

This requires respecting the rights and capabilities of the people and nation to decide on the course of their development.
Self-determination.

This pertains to self-determination at the national level to pursue social and ecological concerns in its governance to achieve human, environmental and food security.
National Sovereignty.
Principles of Sustainable Development (SD):
This recognizes the importance of complementary roles and empowerment of both women and men in development.
Gender Sensitivity.

This make sure that the right if everyone to a peaceful and secure existence is respected.
Peace, Order and National Unity.

This pertains to the equal distribution of resources to everyone and the provision of equal access to development opportunities and benefits to all.’
Social Justice, Inter-and Intra-Generational Equity and Spatial Equity.

This puts value and support to the participation of all in the decision-making process.
Participatory Democracy.

Since SD is everyone’s concern, institutional structures should promote joint responsibility, unity and partnership among all.
Institutional Viability.

This requires working for development that is based on stable economy, where everyone equally shares the benefits of progress.

This requires the needs to maintain a number of people that can be supported by the limited capacity of our natural resources.

This requires that we recognize the earth as a common heritage that belongs to all of us, and everyone should care for its capacity to support us and the future generations.

This means entrusting to the people residing near or within n ecosystem the primary right to manage its resources.
Biogeographical Equity and Community-based Resource Management.

This requires international solidarity of every nation’s effort to build a better life and safer environment.
