Module 20 Flashcards
what is learning
Process of acquiring through experience new and relatively enduring information or behaviors
what is associative learning
Learning that certain events occur together. The events may be two stimuli (as in classical conditioning) or a response and its consequences (as in operant conditioning
what is a stimulus
an event or situation that evokes a response
two types of conditioning
classical: We associate stimuli that we do not control, and we automatically respond (exhibiting respondent behaviors
operant: We associate a response (our behavior) and its consequence (producing operant behaviors).
what is cognitive learning
The acquisition of mental information, whether by observing events, by watching others, or through language
what is observational learning
A form of cognitive learning that lets us learn from others’ experiences.
generalization in classical conditioning
Tendency, once a response has been conditioned, for stimuli similar to the conditioned stimulus to elicit similar responses
discrimination in classical conditioning
Learned ability to distinguish between a conditioned stimulus (which predicts the unconditioned stimulus) and other irrelevant stimuli
