Module 2 Unit 3 - Transverse waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
It is a periodic, continuous disturbance that consists of a train of pulses.
What is transverse wave?
Is a wave where the movement of the particles of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
How do waves work?
As waves travel they also transfer energy.Waves on the sea gain energy from the wind and transfer it across the ocean.
What is a crest ?(In a transverse wave or pulse)
The highest point in a wave (maximum)
What is a trough?(In a transverse wave or pulse)
The lowest point in a wave (minimum)
What is a rest position? (In a transverse wave or pulse)
The position where the particles of the medium stop when they are in a state of balance (equilibrium)
What is phase?
Describes what a wave motion is doing at a particular time
Explain ‘out of phase ‘ wave.
Two points on a wave are out of phase if they move in such a way that they aren’t at similar positions
Explain ‘ in phase ‘ wave.
Two points on a wave are in phase if they move in such a way that they are at similar positions on a wave.
