Module 2 Summary Flashcards

1
Q

Self-Neglect

A

Self-neglect occurs when vulnerable adults refuse or are unable to provide goods and services for their physical and mental health, well-being, and safety. Possible signs include lack of food and water, unsafe living conditions, poor self-care, or poor medical care.

It is not mandatory to report self-neglect in Washington State, but HCAs should stay alert for signs of self-neglect and report them to the Supervisor or Case Manager.

Q

Home Care Aide

A

The role of the HCA is to assist Consumers to maintain their safety, independence, and dignity.

HCAs have the right to be free from abuse, be respected, work in a safe environment, and say “no” if the Consumer is asking the HCA to do something unsafe or outside the care plan.

HCAs have four basic job responsibilities: provide personal care, perform the role as a member of the care team, follow a high standard of professional conduct, and respond to day-to-day situations and emergencies.

It is important for HCAs to set clear, professional boundaries and maintain them. Without these boundaries:
The Consumer may not receive the correct services.
The Consumer may feel ignored.
The HCA may act in dishonest ways.
The Consumer or the HCA may be taken advantage of.

Care Plan

A

The care plan is a written document that outlines everything the care team is to do to support the Consumer and identifies the Consumer’s baseline.

The care plan outlines the HCA’s and care team’s responsibilities; contact information for care team members; the Consumer’s needs, strengths, limitations, and preferences; and instructions for each task.
