Abandonment
Leaving or deserting a person without a way or the ability to care for himself or herself.
Abuse
Abuse is a willful action or inaction that leads to harm.
Bias
Bias is an opinion that influences your judgment.
Confidential
Not revealing any personal information
Consumer
The client.
Consumer-directed care
Respecting consumer differences.
Dignity
A sense of pride and self-respect: feeling worthy of respect form others.
Exploitation
The action of making use of and benefiting from resources.
Grievance
A cause of distress felt to afford reason for complaint or resistance.
Mandatory reporter
A person who has regular work contact with vulnerable people, such as older Consumers, Consumers who are children, or Consumers with disabilities, and is required by law to report suspected abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and abandonment.
Ombudsman
An official appointed to investigate individuals’ complaints against administration, especially that of public authorities.
Privacy
Screening from view when assisting with personal care or not talking about the Consumer’s personal matters and having the ability to be alone and have personal conversations.
Vulnerable adult
Is 18 years or older and:
-Lives in an adult family home, boarding home, or nursing facility
-Receives personal care services in his or her own home
-Has a developmental disability or is incapacitated
Is 60 years or older and unable to care for himself or herself because of functional, mental, or physical disabilities.
