Abuse and Neglect

A

Abuse is intentionally causing harm to a vulnerable adult or child, or causing a vulnerable adult or child to be afraid of being harmed.

It is your responsibility to recognize and report the signs of abuse and neglect.

If you fear immediate danger to the Consumer, call 911. If you suspect abuse or neglect, contact DSHS (1-866-END-HARM or 1-866-363-4276).

Mandatory Reporter

A

A person who has regular work contact with vulnerable people, such as older Consumers, Consumers who are children, or Consumers with disabilities, and is required by law to report suspected abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and abandonment.

Failing to report abuse is a crime that can result in a year in jail and/or a fine!

Consumer Differences

A

Respect and honor Consumer differences, including their viewpoints, opinions, beliefs,
and values.

Ask questions to get to know the Consumer’s preferences and respect the Consumer’s choices.

Consumer Rights

A

Federal and state laws provide Consumers with rights, including the right to confidentiality, informed consent, and the right to refuse treatment, medications, or services.

It is important for you to promote Consumer dignity, privacy, and independence.

Use the problem-solving process to help balance a Consumer’s choice with personal safety.

Report concerns when a Consumer refuses care or makes choices that present a possible safety concern.

If a Consumer is in immediate danger, immediately dial 911.
