Module 2: Reproductive Key Terms Flashcards
Fetal membrane that forms a fluid-filled sac around the embryo.
Amnion
Stage of early embryonic development; the product of cleavage.
Blastocyst
Outermost fetal membrane; helps form the placenta.
Chorion
Developmental stage extending from fertilization to the end of the eighth week.
Embryo
Mucous membrane lining of the uterus.
Endometrium
That portion of the male duct system in which sperm mature. Empties into the ductus (or vas) deferens.
Epididymis
Fusion of the sperm and egg nuclei.
Fertilization
Developmental stage extending from the ninth week of development to birth.
Fetus
Sex or germ cell.
Gamete
Primary reproductive organ; i.e., the testis of the male or the ovary of the female.
Gonad
Production and secretion of milk.
Lactation
Nuclear division process that reduces the chromosomal number by half and results in the formation of four haploid (n) cells; occurs only in certain reproductive organs.
Meiosis
Period of life when, prompted by hormonal changes, ovulation and menstruation cease.
Menopause
The mulberry-like solid mass of blastomeres resulting from cleavage in the early conceptus.
Morula
Immature female gamete.
Oocyte
Female reproductive organ in which ova (eggs) are produced; female gonad.
Ovary
Culmination of pregnancy; giving birth.
Parturition
Temporary organ formed from both fetal and maternal tissues that provides nutrients and oxygen to the developing fetus, carries away fetal metabolic wastes, and produces the hormones of pregnancy.
Placenta
Adenohypophyseal hormone that stimulates the breasts to produce milk.
Prolactin
External sac enclosing the testes.
Scrotum
Fluid mixture containing sperm and secretions of the male accessory reproductive glands.
Semen
Highly convoluted tubes within the testes; form sperm.
Seminiferous tubule
The process of sperm (male gamete) formation; involves meiosis.
Spermatogenesis
Male gamete.
Sperm
Male primary reproductive organ that produces sperm; male gonad.
Testis
Structure bearing arteries and veins connecting the placenta and the fetus.
Umbilical cord
Mature ovarian follicle.
Vesicular (Graffian) follicle
Female external genitalia.
Vulva
Fertilized egg.
Zygote
