Module 2 - Process Safety and Functional Safety Flashcards
What is safety?
Freedom from unacceptable risk
What is the difference between OH&S management and process safety management?
OH&S is concerned with individuals for high frequency, low severity events. Process safety is concerned with low frequency, high severity events
What is a hazard?
A hazard is a potential source of harm
What is a hazardous event?
The consequence of a hazard
What is likelihood?
The probability a hazardous event will occur at any given time
What is risk?
The expected value of loss
What are the two key elements of process safety? Where do SIS sit?
Strength and stress. SIS is concerned with stress
What is functional safety?
Functional safety is the part of overall safety achieved through an SIS
What is the difference between legislation and standards?
Standards are industry consensus on the lowest level of engineering acceptable. Legislation is laws enacted by elected officials and are enforceable through regulation.
List the three types of standards with examples
Generic standards such as IEC 61508, sector-specific standards such as IEC 61511, and application-specific standards such as AS3814-2015
What must you do to comply with a standard?
You must comply with all normative clauses
What is certification?
Certification is independent confirmation that an application complies with all normative clauses of a standard
