Module 2: Open and closed systems Flashcards
1
Q
What type of animals have open circulatory systems?
A
Invertebrates (e.g. snails and earthworms)
2
Q
What is the transport fluid in open and closed circulatory systems?
A
Closed: Blood
Open: Haemolymph
3
Q
How does the haemolymph flow through invertebrates?
A
It is pumped forward in the body, flows vessels then through the body cavities and directly bathes the cells (direct diffusion).
4
Q
How does the blood flow through vertebrates?
A
Pumped around the body by the heart. Blood is contained in the vessels.
5
Q
What is the difference between the pressure and type of heart in open and closed circulatory systems?
A
Open: low pressure, tubular heart
Closed: high pressure, four chambered heart.
