Module 2 - Microscopy Annotations Flashcards
Cells, Chemicals for Life, Transport and Gas Exchange
1
Q
Ocular Lens
A
- Magnifies specimen (but does not resolve the image).
- Can be dismantled to insert an eye piece graticule to enable specimens to be measured accurately.
- Magnifies specimen by x10
- Produces the ‘real image’ observed by user.
2
Q
Body Tube
A
-Passes light rays from objective lens to ocular lens.
3
Q
Revolving Nose Piece
A
- Holds up to 4 objective lenses: enables objectives lenses to be changed to select different focal lengths to achieve different powers of magnification.
- Rotates to enable selection of objective lenses.
4
Q
Objective Lens
A
- Magnifies and resolves specimen.
- High power objective lens: magnifies by x100
- Low power objective lens: magnifies by x4
5
Q
Mechanical Stage
A
- Supports slide in correct position at 90 degrees to illumination source.
- Enables light rays to pass through specimen.
6
Q
Condenser
A
-Focuses light from illumination source onto specimen.
7
Q
Iris Diaphragm
A
- Controls intensity of light reaching specimen.
- Best definition achieved with lower light intensity.
8
Q
Substage Illumination
A
- Source of illumination.
- Usually white light in school laboratories.
- Blue light bulb can be used to use light of a shorter wavelength to improve resolution.
9
Q
Course Focus Adjustment
A
- Raises/lowers the mechanical stage.
- Makes larger scale adjustments to the focus of the specimen.
- Used to locate the specimen in the field of view.
10
Q
Fine Focus Adjustment
A
- Raises/lowers the mechanical stage.
- Makes small scale adjustments to the focus of the specimen.
- Used to bring image into focus and ensure sharp image is observed.
11
Q
Mirror
A
-Used to deflect light rays from external light source up through the diaphragm and condenser to pass through the specimen.
12
Q
Stage Clips
A
-Hold the slide in situ.
13
Q
Arm
A
Used to carry and transport LM in the field.
