Module 2 - Function of Heart Components Flashcards
Cells, Chemical for Life, Transport and Gas Exchange
Atria
Contract to generate a force to move blood at low pressure into the ventricles.
Ventricles
Contract to generate a force to move blood at high pressure out of the heart.
Atrioventricular valves
Prevent backflow of blood from ventricle to atrium when ventricle contracts.
Chordae tendinae
Hold AV valves in place and prevent valves inverting (when under pressure) when the ventricle contracts.
Semilunar valves
Prevents backflow of blood from the arteries (aorta and pulmonary artery) into ventricle when the ventricles relax.
Aorta
Carries oxygenated blood from left ventricle to the body.
Pulmonary artery
Carries deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to the lungs.
Pulmonary vein
Carries oxygenated blood from lungs to left atrium.
Vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium.
Septum
Separates the two sides of the heart from each other so left side can deal with oxygenated blood and the right side with deoxygenated blood.
