Module 2 - Microscopy Flashcards
How many nanometers in a mm
1000 nm
What is Resolution?
The minimum distance between two points where they can still be viewed as two separate points.
Advantage of Light microscope
Cheap
Can observe living cells
Disadvantage of light microscope
Low resolution
Advantages of laser confocal Microscope
Produce 3D images
Can target specific points depending on dyes used
High resolution
How does an electron microscope work?
Uses electron beam rather than light which have a shorter wavelength therefore improving resolution.
Disadvantages of electron microscope
Contains vacuum so cells cannot be living
Expensive
All specimens have to be stained and staining can produce artefacts
What are the two types of electron microscope?
Transmission and scanning
Facts about transmission electron microscope
High resolution
Electron beam passes through a specimen so can see inside
Produces 2D images
Scanning Electron microscope facts
Electrons scattered on surface of cell so you can only see the surface
Produces 3D
Low resolution
Specimens have to be covered in metal ions which can produce artefacts
How do you calculate magnification
Image size \ Actual size
What makes a good scientific drawing
Sharp pencil Title Labels Over half the page No shading State magnification
