Module 2 - Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes
Biological catalysts which speed up chemical reactions
What are intracellular enzymes
Enzymes which work within cells
What are extracellular enzymes
Enzymes which work outside cells
Give an examples of intracellular enzyme and it’s function
Catalase
Breaks down hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water
Give an example of an extracellular enzyme
Trypsin
Catalyses hydrolysis peptide bonds turning bigger ones into smaller ones
What is a competitive inhibitor
Molecules which have the same shape as that of substrate molecules which compete to fit into the active site but no reaction actually takes place
What is a non competitive inhibitor
A molecule which binds to an enzyme away from the active site therefore changing the shape of the active site
What affects wether inhibitors are reverie or not
If they are made up of strong Coventry bonds they are irreversible however if the have weak hydrogen bonds they are revieesible
