Module 2 Lesson 2: A Test's Introductory Kit Flashcards
What will you have to do after you identify a specific test?
Once you have identified a specific test, you will want to examine the test itself and its manuals.
What is initial inspection usually based on?
Initial inspection is usually based on what is called an introductory kit or specimen set.
What does the test kit include?
The kit contains one copy of the most basic materials for the test. These materials usually include the test booklet or other test stimuli, the directions for administering, documents for recording answers, and a technical manual
What is a published test?
A “published” test is one that can be purchased from a publisher, much like a textbook.
What are the eight major sources of information from tests?
- Comprehensive Lists of Tests
- Systematic Reviews of Published Tests
- Special‐Purpose Collections
- Books About Single Tests
- Textbooks on Testing
- Professional Journals
- Publishers’ Catalogs
- Other Users of Tests
What is an unpublished test?
An “unpublished” test is available somewhere, for example, in a journal article or by direct contact with the test author(s). Many unpublished tests have very limited technical information.
The most widely used tests are published or unpublished?
In general, the most widely used tests, such as those covered in Chapters 8–15 in this book, are all “published,” although there are a few exceptions.
What is the Test Collection at ETS?
Perhaps the premier comprehensive database is the Test Collection at ETS (Educational Testing Service). ETS has maintained an inventory of tests for many years in a variety of forms, including special book collections and microfiche. Currently, the most usable form of the collection is Internet accessible on the Web. The current URL is http://www.ets.org/test_link/about. If that URL changes, the collection can be accessed with an Internet search for ETS Test Collection or ETS Test Link. At present, the database has over 25,000 entries.
How can you search tests in the ETS Test Collection?
Tests in the ETS Test Collection database can be searched by test title, author, commonly used initials (acronyms), or key word descriptor (i.e., names of variables or topics such as anxiety or creativity), as well as by several other means. Entries in the Test Collection provide basic descriptive information about a test. Perhaps the most common use of the Test Collection is to identify tests available for a certain construct.
What is PsychTESTS?
A second online comprehensive list is PsycTESTS, a product of the American Psychological Association. Launched in 2011, PsycTESTS is a database containing information about tests and, in some instances, the actual tests. It concentrates on “unpublished” tests, that is, those not commercially available but appearing in some published source such as a journal article. Like other APA databases (e.g., PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES), PsycTESTS can be accessed only by subscription through APA PsycNET.
How many entries as of 2017 does PsychTESTS have?
As of 2017, PsycTESTS contained approximately 50,000 entries. The database is expanding rapidly.
Do the tests in PsycTESTS seek for permission?
Some entries allow for use of the test without further permission, while other entries do require seeking permission. Peri and Hogan (2017) reported that about half of the entries had a copy of the test available and allowed use without seeking special permission; and some entries provide reliability and validity information, but not all do so.
What is HaPI?
Health and Psychosocial Instruments, abbreviated as HaPI, is a database of descriptions for over 15,000 tests, rating scales, questionnaires, and so on, drawn principally from journal articles in health sciences and psychosocial sciences. The database is prepared by Behavioral Measurements Database Services (BMDS). It is available by subscription only online from Ovid and EBSCO. The HaPI database does not have a hard copy version. Without having a subscription to the service, you can see an example of a HaPI record here: http://bmdshapi.com/sample‐records.html.
