-unconscious bias DOES NOT MEAN consciously prejudiced, but not being aware can impact indigenous ppl
A nurse BELIEVES that their elderly client and her family are less educated and incapable of understanding the medical instructions for their procedure because they are Indigenous, so they skip over providing any information to the client or family.
Which type of bias is this?
conscious bias
A midwife’s demeanour shifts upon learning the client’s Indigenous ethnicity. Subtle cues such as raised eyebrows and a lack of eye contact convey an underlying bias such as the client is undeserving of care. Throughout the interaction with the midwife, the client senses an undertone of skepticism and judgment that is unwelcoming and uncomfortable.
Which type of bias is this?
Unconscious bias
Tips to overcome bias (3)
- recognize bias
-focus on individuals
-be accountable
Nurses do not allow their personal judgments about a client, or the client’s lifestyle, to compromise the client’s care by withdrawing or refusing to provide care
duty to provide care
Ensures that one neither initiates nor participates in any practice that is considered harmful to the welfare of others.
Which standard is this?
code of ethics
Accepts and provides care to each client without discrimination (such as on the basis of age, disability, gender identity or expression, genetic characteristics, language, marital status, national or ethnic origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status).
