Rapid Involution

- Pale to light brown
Lochia Alba
- Day 11-14
- Creamy/ yellow, white
- Usually gone within two weeks but may last up to six weeks
When does menstruation return after delivery?
Usually within 7-9 weeks
- First cycle will be non ovulatory
Rubella
-Administer vaccine to nonimmune mothers
- Safe for nursing
-Live vaccine AVOID getting pregnant for 1 month
Let Down Reflex
- Stimulation of the nipple by the baby’s suckling initiates action potentials in the afferent neurons that connect w/ the hypothalamus
- Hypothalamus stimulates the posterior pituitary to release oxytocin & the anterior pituitary to release prolactin
- Oxytocin stimulates milk release from the breast. Prolactin stimulates additional milk production
