Module 15.21 Operation and Monitoring Flashcards
What should be done if there a salt ingestion?
A desalination wash.
If the wash is being done in low temperature with water, what else should be used?
Isopropyl alcohol as an anti-freeze.
How must compressor blades be repaired?
Blended
How should rework of any damage be done?
By hand using files or emery cloth.
How are a complete set of turbine blades made during the manufacturing build-up process of the turbine?
Coded pairs (two blades having the same code letters) and laid out on a bench in the order of moment-weight (heaviest to lightest).
What does turbine blade code letter indicate?
Moment-weight balance in ounces
Where on the turbine blade are code letters marked?
On the rear face of the fir-tree section.
How are the remaining blades during the manufacturing build-up process of the turbine installed?
Consecutively in a clockwise direction.
What needs to be measured to get EPR indication?
Ratio of the jet pipe pressure to the compressor (fan) inlet pressure is measured.
What does N1 show?
Rotor speed of the low-pressure spool.
What does N2 show?
The high-pressure spool speed limit and speed switching during the engine start.
What happens if the EGT has exceeded the red line?
Inspections of the critical engine parts are required immediately.
What do torque monitoring systems indicate?
Power developed by a turbo-prop or turbo-shaft engine.
What are the three types of torque sensing systems?
Hydro-mechanical
Electronic
Phase displacement
What is the engine started with?
External ground Air Power Unit, the APU, or an operating engine.
What needs to be monitored during start-up
Engine Speed
Oil pressure
Exhaust Gas Temperature
What must be checked before positioning the aircraft?
The aircraft technical logbook must be checked for any outstanding entries.
When the engine has been operated at idle or high power levels for extended periods, what should be done?
Operate it at idle power for a period of 5 minutes
What does analysing the operation parameters with the engine trend monitoring show?
Deterioration of the engine’s efficiency and any developing defects.
What is data recording on board the aircraft performed by?
Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS)
When are ACMS take-off reports generated?
During the first four take-offs, then after every 35 take-offs.
What process is used to detect particles in the oil system?
Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program (SOAP)
What is used to detect particles in in the oil system?
Spectrometer
What do engines use to detect engine vibration?
Piezoelectric accelerometers
What are vibration accelerations measured in?
Inches per second (ips) or millimetres per second (mm/s).
How far must object objects and personnel be from the engine doing a run-up?
No closer than 10 metres (30 feet).
What is used to detect and prevent the critical condition of overheating?
Exhaust Gas Temperature
How does a Hydro-mechanical torque sensor work?
Converts oil pressure to a torque signal.
How does a electronic torque signal work?
Converts the twist of the power output into a torque signal.
