Module 1.3 - Storage memory, processing Flashcards
1
Q
Memory
A
- Holds data volatiley
- Is connected by DIMMs on the motherboard
- DIMM( dual inline memory modules)
- Measured in low gigabyte range (1-64 GB)
2
Q
Storage
A
- Non-volatile
- Accessing data stored in storage takes longer
- Measured in gigabytes and terabytes (1024 gb = 1tb)
- Data is stored in files (files stored in folders)
- Storage devices are either magnetic (HDD) or electronic (SSD)
3
Q
Online storage
A
- Disk space allocated to you on an internet server
- Company providing that storage takes responsibility for updates and backups
- Its free but the company hopes youll like it enought o pay for more/premium
4
Q
Advantages of online storage
A
- Easy to share
- Accessible anywhere with internet
- All changes are saved in the same place so all devices will have the latest version of datai
5
Q
Disadvantages of online storage
A
- Data cannot be accessed without an internet connection
- If storage provider shuts down, then you data will be lost
- Large files may take long to open or may be unusable
6
Q
Difference between cloud computing and online storage
A
- Online storage is saving your data on server thats on the internet
- Cloud computing is using your web browser to access programs that run on a server on the internet
7
Q
Backing up
A
- Making a copy of data in case something happens to the original
- Backing up must be quick and easy otherwise people will put it off
- Must be in a different location from the original
- Can be done on a flash drive, online, hard drive, or CD/DVD
- If there isnt enough space on HDD for backup, you can use software that compresses data and compares whats in the backup to whats in the storage
8
Q
Archiving
A
- Making a copy of something that is not meant to be accessed regularly, only when needed
9
Q
CD and DVD
A
- If CD cant write, try wiping with damp cloth or use lense cleaner
- CD capacity: 700MB
- DVD capacity: 4.7GB
10
Q
Trouble writing a CD or DVD
A
- Try writing at a slower speed
- Do not use the device for anything else while it’s writing
- Make sure CD/DVD has enough space
11
Q
Formatting
A
- Preparing a disk to store data
12
Q
Disk scanning
A
- A software utility that scans your driver for errors and your disk for bad sectors and tries to fix them
13
Q
Disk scanning
A
- A software utility that scans your driver for errors and your disk for bad sectors and tries to fix them
14
Q
Disk filling up
A
If disk is too full use disk cleanup to:
* Remove temporary files downloaded from the internet
* Programs that are never/rarely used
* Temporary files from Windows
* Deleted files from recycling bin
15
Q
Processing
A
- Motherboard: large circuit board that all components plug into to communicate
- CPU: Processor measured in GHz. Dual core, quad core(refer to how many CPUs are plugged in). If theres more than 1 then they split the processing
- RAM: Gives CPU instructions, gets instructions from storage
- ROM: Holds instructions for basic start up of computer. During booting, instructions are sent to CPU
