What are problem plays?
Plays that take on a social problem and are kind of stuck between comedy and tragedy.
Why aren’t problem plays just comedies?
They have a happy ending on paper, sometimes even ending in a marriage like most comedies… however, the resolutions aren’t satisfying, and the conclusion can feelsour.

The area designed for people to stand to watch the plays being performed (not an orchestral pit).

Those who paid just one penny to stand on the ground in what was known as “the yard,” watching the show from the area closest to the stage.
