Module 11 Flashcards
Writing net eqn for a sequences of reactions
- add them all up into a big equation
(all reactants -> all products)
1a. If the potential eliminant are of different coefficients, multiply the separate eqns to make them equal) - Whatever repeats, you eliminate
- The eqn you have left is the net eqn
- Balance the eqn
precipitation reaction
1 or more products of the reaction is insoluble in the solution and precipitates from the soln.
combustion reaction
A reaction where O2 reacts w/ a molecule to make CO2 + H2O
acid-base reactions
An H^+ cation is transferred from one compound to the other
The acid loses it.
The base accepts it.
single-replacement reaction
AB +C -> AC +B
double replacement reaction
AB + CD –> AD + BC
decomposition reaction
AB -> A + B
combination reaction
A+B -> AB
pH =
- log([H3O^+]/1 mol * L^-1)
hydronium cation (H3O^+) =
(10^-pH) mol/L
decimals in pH
the amt of decimal places of pH must match the amt of sig figs in its corresponding H3O^+
How to find the volume of stock acid to be used in a dilution
- Find Molarity of [H3O^+] w/ (10^-pH) mol/L
- Multiply this number w/ the final volume (given) to get moles.
3.Use mol/M = L to get the liters to be used of the acid
Finding limiting reactant
Find the mass product produced by each of the given reactants.
The smallest mass has the limiting reactant.
Percent yield
( Actual yield / Theoretical Yield ) * 100%
