HIERARCHY OF EVIDENCE
Learning Outcome: Explain the levels of evidence for intervention questions Taylor, Fundamentals of Nursing, p. 34-35; 37; Figure 2-2 Quantitative Research: Aspirating during the intramuscular injection procedure: a systematic literature review. Level 1 Evidence Level 6 Evidence
STEPS OF EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE
Step 0: Cultivate a spirit of inquiry
Step 1: Ask a burning clinical question in PICOT format
Step 2: Search for and collect the most relevant best evidence
Step 3: Critically appraise the evidence
Step 4: Integrate the best evidence with one’s clinical practice
Step 5: Evaluate the outcomes of the practice decision or change based on evidence
Step 6: Disseminate the outcomes of the evidence-based practice decision or change
Learning Outcome: Describe the steps of evidence-based practice process; Develop a PICOT question
Taylor, Fundamentals of Nursing, p. 38; 41; See Figure 2-4 & Table 2-7
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE ACTIVITY
Find a nursing research journal article of your liking and:
- Find the parts listed in Slide #3
- Based on the hierarchy of evidence in Slide #4, identify if it is qualitative /
quantitative and what level of evidence it is (e.g. Level 6 for expert opinion) - Based on the nursing research journal article of your liking, develop a PICOT
question
Learning Outcome: Discuss the parts of a research journal article; Describe the steps of evidence-based
practice process; Develop a PICOT question
