module 10 Flashcards
Who is the Greek philosopher considered the father of modern scientific thought ?
Aristotle
Who is the father of physics?
Sir Isaac Newton
What is the 1st law of motion?
The velocity of an object will not change unless it is acted upon by an outside force. This is the law of inertia.
What is inertia?
a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force.
What is friction?
a force which results from surfaces rubbing against one another; it opposes motion.
the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another.
What is Newton’s 2nd law of motion?
When an object is acted on by an outside force, the strength of that force is equal to the mass of the object times the resulting acceleration.
simply: if you push an object, the amount of acceleration depends on the mass of the object and the magnitude of the force.
F= (mass) x (acceleration)
What is a Newton?
the standard unit of force: (kg)(m)/(sec)^2
What is kinetic friction?
The friction that exists between surfaces when at least one of those surfaces is moving relative to the other.
What is static friction?
The friction that exists between surfaces when neither surface is moving relative to the other.
What is Newton’s 3rd law of motion?
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
