Module 1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Decay
The progressive loss of integrity of the body by organisms, gas release, weathering, etc
Decomposition
The breakdown of tissues into component parts by enzymes, bacteria, fungus, etc
Protein
A building block of cellular and tissue structure that facilitates tissue functions and maintains structural integrity
Enzyme
A protein which breaks down structures into specific smaller component parts
Disinfection
Destruction of both pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria and autolytic enzymes
Temporary Preservation
Stabilization of proteins and reduction of tissues’ water sensitivity in order to maintain tissue integrity/resist the breakdown of tissues
Restoration
Measures taken to return the body to a more “natural” appearing state by restoring coloration, facial tissues, and shape while reducing evidence of trauma and swelling
Vascular (arterial) embalming
Injection of embalming chemicals through arteries
Cavity Embalming
Direct treatment of the cavities (hollow spaces) of the body
Hypodermic Embalming
Injection of embalming chemicals under the skin
Surface Embalming
Application of embalming chemicals directly to the surface of tissues
