Equipment, instruments, and supplies Flashcards
Preservative embalming chemicals
chemicals used to prevent cell degradation
Accessory chemicals
chemicals used to alter properties of the injected fluid such as pH
Supplemental fluids
Embalming fluids intended to alter properties of the body (color, texture, etc)
Sealing agents
setting materials that stop leakage or bleed from an area
cotton
literally just our good friend cotton. good for applying and forming and absorbing
eye caps
little contact lens type caps with ridges or bars to keep eyelids closed and lively eye shape
trocar button
a lil plug to seal trocar holes
mouth former
an insert that builds and maintains a natural mouth and cheek structure
plastic goods/underwear
covers and undergarments to prevent fluids etc from moving between surfaces (like from the body to clothes)
ligature
thread. Essentially. literally just a closure
calvarium clamps
clamps for skull closure
arterial tubes
tubing used to transfer fluid into arteries
needle injector
a tool which applies anchors and wire for mouth closure (if you hate doing it by hand like an adult)
Scalpel
sharp stab and slice tool. some are fully disposable and some have swappable blades (I like being able to switch out my blades)
Aneurysm hook
a friend which lets us pull a vein/artery up (also just great for getting things places)
Aneurysm needle
a dull poking tool used to maneuver ligatures
Bistoury knife
A long narrow blade for small incisions
Scissors
two mutually affixed movable blades
Groove Director
Knows where the best parties are. Also a lengthy prodding friend to maneuver sutures and feel parts
Hemostats
clicky clamps. hold things and cut off flow
Arterial Fixation Forceps
curved forceps to hold an artery in place
Spring forceps
used to open up a vessel. Also can be used to grab and manipulate bits and pieces
Angular spring forceps
spring forceps with an action end at an angle from the grip
retractors
hold an incision open
Towel clamps
grippy hemostats. Prevent towels and tissues from escaping
drainage tubes
tubing used to transport gas and fluids away from the body
nasal aspirator
sucks gas and fluids through the nose.
autopsy aspirator
drains cavities
Trocar
Long pointy friend. Perforates cavities and organs for fluid flow
hypovalve trocar
a trocar for hypodermic embalming
cavity fluid injector
pushes fluid through a needle or tube into a cavity
hypodermic needles
hollow pointy needles for moving fluid under the skin. Sometimes even connected to a syringe to allow pressure control
Trocar button applicator
inserts trocar buttons into holes
vein expander
opens up a vein to promote flow
needle holder (or needle driver)
a clamp that holds a needle in place and get leverage for suturing
pressure machines
Use pressure to push embalming fluid
hydroaspirator
uses water to create a pressure differential.
electric aspirator
electric suction
gravity injector
uses gravity and pressure differentials to move fluid into the body
hand pump
creates a pressure differential
bulb syringe
I literally hate these so much. It’s a syringe that uses a little ball instead of a plunger and they suck (and push if you need them to)
electric spatula
makes grilled cheese. Not really, it’s just a little heat applicator to reduce swelling and help form
body lift
a device which enables transfer and positioning of heavy things (like bodies)
Positioning devices
blocks and baubles which hold the body in position.
Embalming table
a nifty table with good drainage and a neat water spout. keeps things moving
dressing table
a table for treatment of the body outside of embalming. Makeup, hair, clothes.
Refrigeration
Keeps a body cool
sharps container
a safe place to dispose of needles, blades, etc
