Module 1 Unit 1 - Stress Flashcards
Stages of General Adaptation Syndrome (Selye) definition
STRESS is a state manifested by a specific syndrome of the body developed in response to any stimuli that makes an intense systemic demand on it.”
ALARM STAGE
generalized stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic
pituitary axis (HPA) resulting in release of catecholamines and cortisol. (Fight or Flight!)
RESISTANCE STAGE
the body selects the most effective and economic channels of defense.
EXHAUSTION STAGE
if resistance continues, resources are depleted and signs of wear and tear
occur or systemic damage appears.
Homeostasis
the purposeful maintenance of a stable internal environment via NEGATIVE FEEDBACK
An integrator and comparator sms and compares incoming data with set point
○ The effector system returns the sensed function to within the range of the set point.
Allostasis
physiologic changes in the neuroendocrine, autonomic, and immune systems that occur in response to either real or perceived challenges to heomeostasis.
BAROreceptors
respond to Pressure
CHEMOreceptors
Respond to chemical changes
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:
is a chronic activation of the stress response as a result of experiencing a potentially life threatening event.
Characteristics of PTSD
Inclusion, avoidance, hyperarousal
PTSD; intrusion
occurrence of flashbacks during waking hours that are often vivid
PTSD; avoidance
emotional numbing that accompanies this disorder and disrupts important and personal
relationships
PTSD; hyperarousal
the presence of increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, an exaggerated startle
reflex, and increased vigalanine and concern over safety.
