Module 1 Gibbs Free Energy Flashcards
What is Gibbs Free Energy equation
G0 = H-T(S)
Standard Free Energy Change
G = G0 + RTlnK
Conditions for spontaneous reaction
G < 0
Conditions to make an unfavourable reaction, favourable
Remove products, add reactants, couple with favourable reaction - to make products/reactions < 1
When in equilibrium,
G0 = -RTlnK
When in standard conditions
G0 = G
Standard conditions with respect to enzymes
[Mg2+] = 1mM
[H+] = 10^-7
Why does ATP have such high energy
Exergonic reaction releases energy from the weak phosphoanhydride bonds through hydrolysis
Phosphate ion also in resonance structure which makes it very stable
Define exergonic reaction
Products are in lower energy state (more stable) than reactants - release energy and favourable
Define endergonic reaction
Reactants in lower energy state - absorb energy and unfavourable
