A person’s search for meaning often occurs with the experience of important life events which have the capacity to prompt a person to question the meaning and purpose of their life. Such questioning can lead people to God. When people respond to this, they begin a religious journey.

People search for and find meaning in life in many different ways. In response to the search for meaning, many people find answers in religion and choose to follow a particular religious way of life.

To find meaning and purpose in life, and for Christians to discover God, people need to be aware of personal ‘mystery’. ‘Mystery’ in this sense refers to experiences that have four characteristics. These experiences:
• are deeply personal
• need to be expressed
• cannot be expressed by words alone (as a result, they require other non-verbal expressions such as gestures, symbols and rituals)
• can never be understood fully, for there will always be new insights and ideas.
