Module 1 Flashcards
Laws, Policies, Practices for English Learners
EL, ELL, ESL
English Learner (different acronyms have been updated through years but all acronyms mean that English isn’t the first language)
Home Language Survey
Questionnaire given to parents and guardians that helps school and LEAs identify which students are potential ELs and who will require assessment of their English language proficiency (ELP) to determine whether they are eligible for language assistance services.
Title III of ESSA
Spells out changes made for English Learners and requires states to use standardized practices to identify students in need of English Language instruction support, including assessment in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Requires states to use funds to supplement activities that provide training to increase knowledge and teaching skills of teachers who teach ELs.
Over Identification
We don’t necessarily have services we need for ELL
ELs get SPED help that they don’t need. They only need English language help not SPED.
Under Identification
To nervous because they’re wondering if they are having challenges because of trouble with English language problems.
ELs don’t get SPED help they really need
