Module 1 Flashcards
Duty of care
Legal obligation that requires a tree owner to apply reasonable actions when performing tasks that may potentially harm others
Standard of care
Degree of care that a reasonable person should exercise in performing duty of care
Tree risk management
The application of policies, procedures, and practices used to identify, evaluate, mitigate, monitor and communicate tree risk
Tree risk assessment
Systematic process used to identify, analyze and evaluate tree risk
Tree risk evaluation
The process of comparing the assessed risk against given risk criteria to determine the significance of the risk.
Risk
The combination of the likelihood of an event and the severity of the potential consequences
2 primary approaches to risk
Qualitative and quantitative
Scope of work
Agree on goals, limitations, and budget of the assessment. Timetable for inspection and reporting Method of reporting Details of statement Target zone
7 steps of tree risk assessment
Target-identify and locate possible targets
Tree parts-identify tree or tree parts that could impact a target
Failure-evaluate tree, or tree part for likelihood of failure
Impact-evaluate the likelihood of tree part impacting a target
Consequences-estimate the consequences of tree or tree part failure
Risk rating-assign risk rating for each target and condition of concern.
Report-develop risk report and present mitigation options
Limited visual assessment process
Locate identify tree to be assessed Determine route Assess trees Evaluate risk Identify trees that need a higher level of assessment Submit report
Basic assessment process
Assess target Assess site conditions Assess tree health, structure and loads Record observations Analyze data and categorize risk Evaluate level of risk Develop mitigation options Report
target zone
Drip line-branch failures
1x tree height-large branch or trunk failure with dead branches
1.5x tree height-whole tree failure with dead branches
